MELANIE HERMAN (Producer) Melanie Herman began her career in the 1970's as founder and artistic director of The Bank - an off-Broadway innovative and multimedia theatre in Brooklyn Heights. She also served as associate producer of Candaules Commissioner, an off-Broadway show, and was casting director for both industrial and independent feature films for several years.
During her early years as an emerging producer, Ms. Herman was cited by renowned journalist Vincent Canby on the front page of the Arts and Leisure section in The New York Times. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Canby exclaimed that 'Brooklyn Banners waived high for the youngest producer emerging in the Broadway and off-Broadway' scene.
In 1975, Ms. Herman took a brief hiatus from producing to establish Corporate & Leisure Travel, a high-end international boutique travel company. She has successfully fused her theatrical origins with corporate business acumen, thus supporting her reemergence as a legitimate producer of the New York theatre community.
While searching for new theatrical opportunities, Ms. Herman discovered the talented and critically acclaimed artistic team of The York Theatre Company - with which she has been actively involved for the past few years and assists in achieving their long-term goals, among other support.
It was at The York that Ms. Herman first saw a reading of a new, original musical comedy entitled THE MUSICAL OF MUSICALS (THE MUSICAL!). After attending its second reading, she became even more enthusiastic at the future prospects for the show, and committed to transferring the show commercially after the initial York Theatre Company production was mounted and received unanimous critical acclaim.
THE YORK THEATRE (Producer) The York Theatre is in New York City dedicated to developing and fully producing new musicals and preserving neglected, notable shows from the past. For over three decades, the York's intimate, imaginative style of producing both new and neglected classic musicals has resulted in critical acclaim, multiple awards, and acclamation from artists and audience alike. Founded by Janet Hayes Walker in 1969, the York has presented over 50 full-scale musical productions, including such classics as THE GOLDEN APPLE, THE GRASS HARP, ON THE 20TH CENTURY, A DOLL'S LIFE, LOST IN THE STARS, CARNIVAL, and MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG. Two of the York's eight productions of Sondheim shows, SWEENEY TODD and PACIFIC OVERTURES, transferred to commercial runs off-Broadway. Under the guidance of Artistic Director James Morgan since 1997, The York has focused exclusively on new musicals - most of them world, American or New York Premieres - by some of the field's most esteemed creators, including Cy Coleman, Gretchen Cryer and Nancy Ford, Tom Jones & Harvey Schmidt, Joe Masteroff, Stephen Schwartz, and Joseph Stein. The York has also helped launch the careers of many talented newer writers, including Douglas Cohen, Brad Ross, Stephen Cole, Matthew Ward, David Javerbaum, Robert Cohen, BT McNicholl, Paul McKibbins, Mathew Frank and Dean Bryant, Michael Small, Eric Rockwell and Joanne Bogart, Joanne Sydney Lessner and Joshua Rosenblum. The company frequently presents workshops of new musicals, a number of which are recipients of the prestigious Richard Rodgers Development Award (administered by the American Academy of Arts & Letters).
